The literary season: five Saint-Germain bookshops worth the detour
In late August, several hundred novels come out within a few weeks. The neighbourhood is still the best place in the city to get lost among them.
France’s rentrée littéraire is a happy anomaly: an avalanche of new books packed into six weeks, between late August and mid-October. In Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the shop windows change every week and the booksellers have strong opinions they are happy to share.
Start on rue de l’Odéon and work your way up towards rue Saint-Sulpice: within four hundred metres you will pass a demanding general bookshop, two specialists and a second-hand stock. Ask what the bookseller enjoyed personally — the answer is more useful than any bestseller list.
Guests at La Verrière Saint-Germain are three minutes from this loop. We leave a selection of the season’s books in the apartment — feel free to take it with you, that is what it is for.
