Covered markets, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

Marché des Enfants-Rouges, Beauvau, Saint-Quentin: three ways to have lunch or do your shopping, and the best times to go.

The Marché des Enfants-Rouges in the 3rd is the oldest covered market in Paris and the closest to L’Atelier du Marais. You eat standing up, and very well, as long as you arrive before noon or after two — in between, the wait is off-putting.

The Aligre market and its Beauvau hall in the 12th still offer the best value in the city for fruit, vegetables and cheese. On Saturday mornings the crowd is dense, but prices drop at the end of trading, around half past one.

The Marché Saint-Quentin, near the Gare de l’Est, is the largest and the least touristy. It is also the best covered: a good option on a rainy day. Closed on Mondays, like almost every market in Paris.
